On the A5087 coastal road between Barrow-in-Furness and Ulverston, lies the small village of Newbiggin. The beach here is composed mainly of pebbles, with a few rocks. At low tide an area of sand and mud is exposed. From this peaceful, undeveloped stretch of beach there are views across Morecambe Bay towards Morecambe itself. The beach is particularly dangerous for bathing because of the quicksands, shifting channels and rapid-incoming tides of the bay. In 2004, Morecambe Bay hit the headlines when at least 21 undocumented Chinese migrant cockle-pickers lost their lives. There are no dog restrictions here at any time of the year.
