Markse Sands is a predominantly sandy beach, with some shingle higher up the beach away from the shoreline, opposite the village of Marske-by-the-Sea. Water sports such as surfing, boating, and windsurfing are all popular along this stretch of coastline, as is fishing, swimming and walking. The wide beach offers visitors an excellent opportunity to stretch their legs, particularly when the tide is out and a vast, flat, sandy area is exposed. Parking is available in the town, as well as number of shops, restaurants, pubs, and public toilets. The beach can be reached down a slipway found at the end of High Street. The village also contains a museum in an old cottage known as Winkies Castle, run by volunteers and containing rotating exhibitions. A railway station in the village offers services to Darlington.
