The wide sandy beach located in front of the East Riding village of Mappleton is ideal for dog walking. This section of North Sea coastline is known as Holderness and is situated around 3 miles (5 km) south of the seaside resort of Hornsea. Whilst you won't find any of the traditional at seaside attractions seen up the coast at Mappleton there is a free car park at top of cliffs and tea rooms nearby. Mappleton is a former MoD bombing range and as such there are signs warning of old armaments and the danger of picking up metal objects. However, this doesn't stop people enjoying the vast wide open spaces at low tide. The Holderness coastline is home to the fastest eroding cliffs in Europe so steer clear of them! The sea here is reclaiming areas of land at a rate of nearly 10 metres (30ft) a year. This is good news for fossil hunters but has also been known to uncover the odd unexploded bomb.
