The beach at Keel is a long (4km) crescent of sand that runs between the villages of Keel and Dookinelly To the back of the beach are low sand dunes along with a line of boulders and shingle washed in by storms. Beyond this is an area of flat 'machair ' grassland, a habitat unique to this region of Ireland and of special scientific interest. The back of the beach is also home to the Achill Golf Club, home to a a nine hole links course. For those looking for a little more water based action Trawmore Strand is a popular spot for surfing as it picks up the Atlantic swells. Being quite exposed means care should be taken when swimming here, but with seasonal lifeguards on duty it is safe in the summer. However, please note that you should only swim at the end closest to Keel as there can be strong currents further down the beach.
