This urban beach is a strip of sand and shingle to the south of Sunderland Docks. The sloping beach is interspersed by wooden groynes and rocky sea defences and is backed by a sea wall above which is a promenade. From the beach there are views over the industrial buildings of the city and port area. A section of the England Heritage Coastal Path passes the beach. Sunderland has a museum, the National Glass Centre and the Stadium of Light as well as plenty of shops and places to stay and eat.
