Situated on the Devon / Somerset border on the Exmoor Coast is the oft deserted beach of Glenthorne. In fact it is more common for the beach to be empty than not. Set at the bottom of high wooded cliffs Glenthorne Beach was once part of a country estate. There are a few remnants of these days including a ruined boathouse, a trout pool and some old lime kilns. These combine with the natural interest features such as a small waterfall, caves and geologically important rock formations. The beach itself is a pleasant enough spot, although the pebbles are actually rock-sized making walking the shoreline hard work. One of the high points of a visit to Glenthorne is the lovely walk down through the woods. From the car park at County Gate the path descends over 1,000 feet (300m) to the beach below.
