More Information...

Fenit is a small, sheltered sandy beach, looking south onto Tralee Bay, with excellent views across to the mountainous Dingle Peninsula on the other side. Thanks to its sheltered location and calm waters, the beach is very popular for swimming, with a lifeguard on duty every day from the beginning of June until the end of August. Sailing and kayaking are equally popular here, and the beach has been awarded Blue Flag status. Overlooking the beach is a large car park with public toilets, picnic tables and a children’s playground. Across the road there is a café, and further facilities such as a bar, a shop, and places to stay can be found a short distance away in the centre of Fenit. To the east of the beach a causeway leads to the harbour, which plays an important role in the local economy. This area of the coast has some interesting history. In 1583, Nuestra Señora del Socorro, a ship from the Spanish Armada surrendered here - all 24 men were hanged. In 1922, Fenit was the scene of a major landing by Free State soldiers in the Irish Civil War as part of an offensive to take Kerry.
