Dunoon, on the west shore of the Firth of Clyde, is the largest town in the Argyll area. Attractive villas, built in the 19th century as holiday homes for wealthy Glaswegians line the seafront. There is a Victorian pier and a ferry terminal taking passengers across the Clyde to Gourock. Because the town is more easily accessed by ferry than by road it has something of an island atmosphere. The town is built around two bays. West Bay has a shingle beach. Dunoon Castle lies at one end of the beach. Thought to be 12th century in origin, this was once a major military stronghold. Today all that remains is a romantic ruin.
