More Information...

Duncannon is a mile-long golden, sandy beach facing south. It stretches from beneath the village of Duncannon out into the wide estuary carved by the River Barrow. Its sheltered location protects it from the strongest waves and makes it a popular spot for swimming during the summer months. Lifeguards patrol the beach every day from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm during the holiday season. There are excellent views from the beach across the estuary to Hook Head and the hilly Waterford coastline. Parking is available in the centre of Duncannon alongside the beach, and it is even possible to drive down onto the sand. Toilet facilities and a small café can also be found here, with further facilities such as shops and places to eat scattered around the town. At the northern end, looking down onto the beach, is Duncannon Fort, originally built in 1588.Today it houses a maritime museum, an art gallery and a café. It featured in the 2002 film "The Count of Monte Cristo".
