More Information...

Located on the Ring of Kerry in a Natural Heritage Area (NHA) is the natural harbour of Derrynane Bay. Within this bay is a beautiful beach of fine sand with rocky outcrops. The largest stretch of sand is known as 'Danger beach' on account of there being dangerous currents here. This section is marked and during the summer there are lifeguards on duty so swimming is safe. At the western end of the beach, and now connected to the mainland by a spit of sand, is Abbey Island. On the side of the island overlooking the bay are the ruins of St Finian's Abbey which date back to the 8th century. Also of historic interest is Derrynane House which is set back from the bay a little way. Now open to the public this was the home of politician Daniel O'Connell, also known as the Liberator due to his work against slavery.
