Coral Beach (or Coral Beaches) is situated in the north of the Isle of Skye by the small crofting community of Claigan, which is a few miles along a single track lanefrom the village of Dunvegan. The name conjures up images of a tropical beach and on the right day the view won't disappoint, although the temperatures probably will! With crystal clear blue water and white sand stretching off to the distinctive "Ghrobain", a flat-topped hill, this is a stunning spot. The 'coral' in the name actually comes from 'Red Coralline', a type of seaweed that grows on the reef offshore. Much of the sand on the beach is made up of the fossilised sun-bleached skeletons of this seaweed, along with various shells. At low tide you can walk across to and explore the small island of Lampay, although you will need to check the tide times to make sure you don't get stranded.
