Colwyn Bay is one of North Wales' classic Victorian seaside resorts. Still popular, it has however lost some of its sparkle over the years. The good news though is this is a resort that is working hard to reinvent itself and recreate that heyday. In recent years the beachfront at Colwyn Bay has been transformed with the multimillion pound Porth Eirias ('Park by the sea') waterside development. This features a watersports centre, shops and restaurant. The beach itself is the whole reason the resort exists in the first place. A generous stretch of fine golden sand backed by a seawall and promenade. As you would expect from a Blue Flag beach there are no shortage of facilities along the beachfront or in the town, which is only a few minutes walk away. Towards the middle of the beach are the remains of Victoria Pier; dating back to the turn of the century, this stump of a pier is now in a sorry state after a number of failed regeneration bids. Closed to the public, there is talk of demolishing the pier or building a new pier. Nearby attractions include Eirias park, and the Welsh Mountain zoo.
