Castlehill Beach lies close to the eastern tip of Scotland's northern coastline, between Castletown and Dunnet. The beach forms the western end of Dunnet Bay, a long stretch of sand and shingle, backed by grassy dunes. Behind the dunes, the A836 runs adjacent to the beach. The beach is used by surfers and is a good place to come for tranquil walks. The area is also popular with birdwatchers, particularly at Dunnet Head and St John's Pool. The nearest facilities are in the small village of Castletown, which has a working flagstone harbour, a hotel, a guesthouse, fish and chip shop and grocery store. A heritage trail leads visitors through sites connected to the town's flagstone quarrying industry. Dunnet Head, the headland which contains the most northerly point of the British mainland, lies just beyond the north end of Dunnet/Murkle Bay, and is well worth a visit.
